Three separate checks before changing an AI API endpoint

Switching an application to a different language-model service changes more than a base URL. A useful evaluation separates three questions: can the client exchange requests correctly, does the selected model behave the way the application needs, and can the team keep usage within its budget?

  1. Check the transport contract

Begin with a harmless request whose result is easy to inspect. Confirm the base URL, authentication, selected model identifier and response format. Test streaming separately: an application that displays one complete response can still mishandle partial chunks or an interrupted connection. Keep a small set of repeatable examples so later changes can be compared against the same inputs.

OpenAI-compatible describes an integration interface. It does not establish that every provider implements every endpoint, parameter or model feature identically. Check the current documentation for the exact feature your application uses rather than assuming compatibility from the label alone.

  1. Check model behavior

A successful HTTP response does not establish useful output. Build a small evaluation set from the application's actual tasks, using synthetic or otherwise authorized data. Include ordinary cases, ambiguous instructions and cases where the application must respect a clear boundary. Write down what acceptable output means before comparing responses.

An uncensored or abliterated model may respond differently from a conventional instruction-tuned model. That difference should be evaluated for the intended task; the label alone does not prove factual accuracy, dependable formatting or better reasoning. Do not confuse fewer refusals with better answers. Review results and retain application-level controls appropriate to the product.

  1. Check spending and operational limits

Run a bounded pilot rather than sending production traffic immediately. Record the selected model, request counts and observed usage. Start with a low spending limit and a narrow model allowlist. Inspect failures as well as successes: a usable application needs a sensible response to an unavailable model, a rejected request or a dropped stream.

Where UncensoredLabs fits

UncensoredLabs provides uncensored and abliterated AI models through an OpenAI-compatible API. The platform supports streaming chat completions, prepaid token-based billing, API-key spending limits, model allowlists and per-request usage tracking. Existing compatible clients can be evaluated by changing the API base URL and using an appropriate key and model.

New accounts are offered a one-time $0.10 usage credit to try the service. It is promotional API usage credit, not cash, and ordinary model prices and request limits apply. This is not a recurring free tier.
